Vasco da Gama's Voyage to India

The early fourteenth and fifteenth centuries saw a spate of seafarers wanting to find new routes into unmanned areas of the sea. After Magellan probably the one sailor who is best known for his voyages of discovery is Vasco da Gama. Born around 1460 in Portugal he is best known for having discovered India. He charted the course of the European countries policies of imperialism and colonialism. He landed in Calicut ( Kozikode)in 1498. He set out on this voyage to find a way of linking the East and the West and avoiding the Mediterranean Sea which posed number of dangers for the sailors. The Middle Age The fall of the Roman Empire marked the beginning of a new age in the history of Europe and most historians refer to it as the Dark Ages or the Middle Age. The name Dark Age was given by the Italian scholar and poet Petrarch as during this time he felt Latin literature and art were declining. This has come under question as the name is used to denote the period from5th to 10th centuries where there were intermittent periods of intellectual advance and periods of lull. The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was the longest war that the USA was involved in. Vietnam is a nation in South East Asia bordering the Indonesian peninsula. During the First World War the Japanese attacked it and wanting to free itself from the French colonial power and Japan HO Chi Minh inspired by communist ideals set up the Viet Minh or League of independence for Vietnam. Japan lost the war and backed out of Vietnam. Seizing this opportunity Ho Chi Minh wanted to set up a government independent of other countries. Emperor Bao Dai was in control of Vietnam at this time.
