South India was ruled by the Cholas for a long time and these kings were known for their good governance and love for art, architecture and literature. They fostered the growth of all three and we find many marvelous temples and forts have been built during their reign. Tamil as a language also gained prominence during this period and a number of poets and learned men adorned the courts of these kings. A number of discussions on topics of interest were discussed and scholars from other kingdoms were invited to these discussions popularly named as Sangams .Along with the Cheras and Pandyas who also ruled South India these rulers were given the credit for having popularized the Tamil language. A group of seafarers with the intention of trade set up a company called the East India Company in 1600. Their aim was to look for a route to trade with the East Indies. On one such voyage Vasco-da-Gama discovered the city of Calicut and went back with booty of spices and news that the country he had disembarked was one with huge potential for raw materials and human resources. Though it was the Portuguese who realized that natural resources were available in plenty it was the English who capitalized on this. In a fairy tale like ending they got the rights to set up factories from the numerous small kingdoms and slowly weaned their way into the politics of the kingdoms. Using the jealousies of the several kingdoms and fanning the egos of the rulers they slowly established themselves as a major partner in running the country. Abdul Kalam the former President of India is perhaps one of the rare gems that India has produced. Born to poor parents he rose to the highest office of the country through sheer grit, determination and hard work. Till his last day in office he worked for the upliftment of the country especially for the poorer sections of society as he knew the pain of being poor. He set out on this voyage to find a way of linking the East and the West and avoiding the Mediterranean Sea which posed number of dangers for the sailors.
