These manual laborers lived in a town near the construction site. The structure consists of an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks, weighing up to fifteen tons each. These were carried up and down the Nile river from a nearby quarry. During its construction, a block would have to be set every two and half min. The Vietnam War was the longest war that the USA was involved in. Vietnam is a nation in South East Asia bordering the Indonesian peninsula. During the First World War the Japanese attacked it and wanting to free itself from the French colonial power and Japan HO Chi Minh inspired by communist ideals set up the Viet Minh or League of independence for Vietnam. Japan lost the war and backed out of Vietnam. Seizing this opportunity Ho Chi Minh wanted to set up a government independent of other countries. Emperor Bao Dai was in control of Vietnam at this time.
